The Purpose of Engagement Ring Settings
The purpose of engagement ring settings is to keep the gemstone set firmly and securely to the band. It is made up of tiny squarish or round frames that are molded to the band and can contain about four to six prongs or claws that hold the gemstone into place. Different numbers of prongs in the settings allow for different types of shapes and sizes, as well as aid in letting in light that can be refracted both from without and from within the stone. Prongs in engagement ring settings must be symmetrically arranged and level to each other so that they can best show off the gemstone's natural features and best assets. There are many different types of settings that serve to complement not only the style of the stone cut but also the type of the finger that wears that stone. Choosing the setting of your engagement ring is just as important as the choosing of the stone itself.
